Tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece and additional title. It follows the life of David Copperfield from childhood to maturity. Many elements of the novel follow events in Dickens' own life, and it is often considered as his veiled autobiography. One thing for certain is that it was the author's favorite among his own novels.
This first book edition of "David Copperfield" has 9 of the 10 points of reference contained in the first issue: 1. No half-title. Six-line errata leaf on page xv. Chapter xxvii listed in table contents at pp. No quotes at end of pp Page viii, preface, has the final "i" misaligned. Engraved title page is dated However, "screamed" has been corrected to "screwed" on pp. This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with 39 tissue-guarded engravings by Hablot Knight Browne , the celebrated English artist well-known by his pen name, Phiz, who illustrated books by Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Harrison Ainsworth.
It contains the second of Browne's so-called "dark plates" "The River," at page - the first dark-plate appeared in Dombey and Son , created by a machine process that tints the etched plate so as to heighten the contrast between black and white, anticipating some of the techniques of white-line engraving Johannsen, Phiz, Some age wear on binding with spine sunned and partly rubbed, and some rubbing along edges. Verso of frontispiece repaired at upper left margin. Some pages pulling inside. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout.
First edition, later issue in dark green calf binding and extensive gold gilt lettering and decoration of spine; rubbing to spine edges.

Brand new. David Copperfield is the timeless tale of a thoughtful orphan discovering how to live and love in a cutthroat, indifferent adult world. It firmly embraces all the eternal freshness, the comic delights, the tender warmth, and the ghastly horrors of childhood.
Of all Charles Dickens' novels, this is perhaps the most revealing, both of Dickens himself and of the society of his time. Certainly Copperfield's experiences-his early rejection, child labor in a warehouse, experience as a journalist, and final success as a novelist-are strikingly similar to Dickens' own. It is little wonder that Dickens said of it, Of all my books I like this the best. Like many fond parents I have in my heart of hearts a favorite child.
And his name is David Copperfield. Seller Inventory AAC Published by Bradbury and Evans, London: About this Item: Bradbury and Evans, London:, Brown illustrator.
